Management

There are accredited courses in Management at Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diploma levels. Participants who have successfully completed the Management Foundations (student outcomes focus) course with Professional Performance Australia will have met more than all the necessary criteria for the award of the Diploma of Management.*

The Management program has been designed to be achieved in the workplace. All evidence of competence is assessed in the workplace against the nationally endorsed  Standards. These standards not only describe what managers and leaders are expected to do in their working roles, but also specify the knowledge and understanding that underpin competence.

This course was developed in response to a need throughout Australia for managers to have people management and strategic management skills along with well-developed communication skills across all industries from trade to financial organisations.

The training program is one of the important consequences of the Karpin Inquiry into Management and Leadership Skills in Australia. (Enterprising Nation 1995)

Managers need to be able to manage both their own performance and that of others as well as the important operations relating to their work.

The leadership and management skills essential for this role are the main focus of the course.

What is a “Unit of Competency”?

The Diploma of Management like all other Nationally Accredited courses in all Training Packages has Units of Competency as components of the course.

These Units of Competency are key components of all competency standards and are the building blocks of the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector qualifications.

The table below describes the various components of a Unit of Competency.

Units of Competency Structure

Unit title and code

Each unit of Competency has a title. For example, “Manage Projects”, and a code “BSBPMG510A”. The first three letters of the code indicate the training package of which the Unit of Competency is a part, in this case, “Business Management Services”.

Unit Description

The description expands on the title and explains more on what is the purpose of that particular Unit of Competency.

Application of Unit

This gives further explanation of the context of how and where the Unit can be used. If the course has been updated and this unit replaces another, it is also mentioned here. If the Unit has prerequisites and/or it is closely aligned with other Units of Competency, this is discussed in the “Application of Unit” section.

Elements of Competency

These elements describe the various outcomes that are expected of participants completing this particular Unit of Competency. All of the basic components or key activities required are covered by the Elements of Competency.

Performance Criteria

The Performance Criteria specify the standards of performance in terms of outcomes required for the participant to be deemed “competent”. The assessor for the course will use these standards to determine whether or not the combined unit and elements have been performed to the required standard.

Range of Variables

The “Range of Variables” specify the range of conditions to which the various performance criteria could apply.

Evidence Guide

The Evidence Guide provides advice to inform and support appropriate assessment of the particular Unit of Competency. It also includes aspects which need to be emphasised in assessment, relationship to other units, and the required evidence of competency.
